Salieri, Mozart, AI, and your business

April 9, 2024 by Mike Russell Leave a Comment

There is a great scene in the movie “Amadeus”: (https://lnkd.in/ehsJqwM5)

Composer and teacher Salieri presents Mozart with a piece of music in Mozart’s honor.

Mozart thanks Salieri and plays the music … then declares “that doesn’t really work, does it?” And proceeds to test some variations until he finds one that “works.”

Salieri was clearly a technical master and popular as a teacher. He did achieve success in his lifetime.

However, his success paled compared to Mozart’s both then and especially now. If it had not been for the play and resulting movie, Salieri would have been mostly forgotten … at least outside classical music specialists.

What does this have to do with AI and your business?

Business is ultimately both science AND art.

Keeping your business humming requires both having a score and conducting the orchestra.

AI can help with the technical details and automating some lower level work. And should for your business to keep up with (or pass) competitors. Don’t fear AI; fear competitors using AI if you don’t.

AI cannot help so much with the “art” of your business. What makes truly great music? Going beyond the mechanics of the score and by-the-numbers “conducting” … infusing art to both.

Make sure you understand what is the science part and what is the art part.

The art part is the human part that AI can’t replicate, at least now.

The former (AI) serves the latter (humans). Don’t let it get the other way around.

Miscommunication, conflicting information, bad information

March 14, 2024 by Mike Russell Leave a Comment

You can find examples of mixed/conflicting communications and messaging every day, ranging from companies to governments to people and just about every entity.

This one below caught my attention as I am preparing to fly out of/into Austin-Bergstrom International Airport for the first time. I checked parking as the next two weeks are peak times for Austin travel, with both SXSW and spring break going on at the same time.

Airport parking motto: “Park with ease” … you can read the excerpts from the official website and 2023 press release below to see the contradictions between the much touted reserved parking program’s stated aims and reality.

  1. Reserved parking is expressly for peace of mind and stress reduction. See the first screenshot below which is a rotating image on the top of the current website home page, the the second screenshot from the FAQs about parking reservations, and the third screenshot from the 2023 press release about the new reservation feature.
  2. Note that the second and third specifically mention the system will be especially helpful during busy/peak periods.
  3. So far so good … that’s what I want! Except … the fourth screenshot is on the website not far below the rotating image about reserved parking … saying that because of “high volumes of travelers” (i.e., busy/peak period) reserved parking is suspended. (I didn’t add the bolding/red … that’s the way it looks!)
  4. In other words, the system to provide “park with ease” and peace of mind during busy/peak periods has been suspended due to a busy/peak period!
  5. Adding to the confusion is the reason for suspension: “helps ensure parking is available to all customers.” If parking is available for all customers without the reservation system, even during busy/peak periods, then the reservation system isn’t needed. The only reason for a reservation system for “peace of mind” is if parking runs out at times. Or maybe the stated reason is code for some other reason to suspend reservations? Keep it weird, Austin 😉

Have you checked your communications lately? Checked with your customers to see if what you think you are communicating is what they think you are communicating?

Culture – intentional or unintentional?

Culture will happen … the question: is it intentional or unintentional?

Colleague Tom Meloche and I have a discussion about some aspects of culture, and why it’s even more important for small to medium size businesses than they think.

Of tech stacks … and org stacks

February 27, 2024 by Mike Russell Leave a Comment

A subtle form of organizational suboptimization can lead to not-so-subtle problems.

Process optimization has been popular for decades … and often needed.

When technology became a key driver, “tech stack” optimization came to the forefront as well. “Moving to the cloud,” AI, and other tech developments have only added to a necessary focus on optimizing the various technology layers.

But what about optimizing the overall organization?

That’s another “stack” that is often overlooked: the org stack.

It’s helpful to optimize processes and technology.

However, neglecting people, culture, organizational structures, etc. can undo all our other process optimization efforts. More likely, the resulting chaos and even dysfunction in the rest of the organization “system” will outweigh the targeted optimizations. Hence, suboptimization rather than overall improvement.

Pay attention to the entire organizational system when making improvements.

This applies to both startups and established businesses, especially most transformation initiatives, digital or otherwise.
